Me and my husband recently moved to Bath and registered with Newbridge Surgery. For the most part they are pretty good (when you consider how underfunded and stretched GP practices are) and unlike other practices they actually pick up the phone and you are able to get an appointment (even if it’s a month wait to do so).

Unfortunately, I was recently disappointed with them as I called up to make an appointment for my husband Lewis, and specifically asked to see a GP. The receptionist confirmed he will be seen by a ‘“lady doctor” and we were happy to wait a month for the appointment at this time. The appointment itself was fine, we saw a lady called Jo Wilson and we felt reassured and left satisfied. It was only today, when I popped in for my own midwifery appointment that I noticed on the staff photos that Jo Wilson is in fact not a GP but a nurse practitioner. I queried this at the desk, and was dismissed with “nurse practitioners can carry out the roles of a GP and a nurse”. I have the outmost respect for nurses, but as a patient I would appreciate being told if I was seeing a nurse practitioner and not a GP when we have specifically asked to see a GP, as they do NOT have the same level of training by any means. At the very least, we should have been asked if we were happy to see an NP and not a GP as requested at the time of booking, seeing as we were waiting a month to be seen. To be not told at all, and then dismissed without an apology when I queried it at the front desk is not acceptable.

I would urge other patients to beware when booking appointments and check they are seeing a health professional suitable for their needs.

If you have mental health problems, avoid this place like the black death. Dismissive and rude GPs who will keep sending you to useless charities and when you go back, you are told to go private. Kept me going round in circles for years. If you want at least 30 seconds thought put into the medication they give you, go elsewhere. I now have bi-lateral tinnitus because of the lack of thought put into the meds I was given. Again, when you speak with them ,they have no idea why you are there. If you want to make a complaint and don't want to speak with them at work, you have to use up your holiday to call them because the woman who deals with complaints, won't call you past three o clock. The standards of service at this surgery are offensive (they know the services they are sending you to are rubbish). I was also told they have only started to record calls in the last 6-8 months(!) and my complaint will be handled by the person who I made the complaint about(!)-so they audit themselves and apparently there is no-one above them that I can speak to. They know the levels of service are diabolical but seem happy with them as they are not the ones on the receiving end-toffs pretending to be GPs. You are supposed to be in their care but they could not give two hoots where they send you, even after you are blue in the face from telling them that you are getting worse. But don't worry, there's a therapist at Newbridge Surgery for £100 an hour if you can afford it. If you can't afford to go private, that's your problem. Even if you have expressed suicidal thoughts and feelings. But don't worry GPs of Newbridge Surgery, as long as you're getting paid, right?

I am more than happy with the service and quality of care, i think the staff do work really hard, the new web site is great and easy to use, I get on really well with the Txt system that tells you to book an appointment, tells me what for and then gives me options that i can pick when so really good. I feel I have been really well looked after with good advice so thank you!

They really take care of our most vulnerable here and the doctors/nurses/reception are quick to address any emergency when it has come to my 98year old grandma. Kind, compassionate. Very lucky to have this surgery in Bath.

I just want to express my gratitude for this practice that I have been with 10 years.
My friend has recently experienced terrible service from her GP and I feel so lucky that I am a patient at Newbridge surgery. From the reception staff nurse practitioners to every single one of the doctors I could not be more grateful-Thankyou.

If you are suffering from mental health problems, I would not recommend coming to Newbridge surgery. They do not care, they will not try to help you, they will simply stick you into the system and when that leads to nothing they will shrug their shoulders and send you on your way without any further check-ins or care.

They will book you in for a flu jab, or offer quick solutions to things like asthma. Their lack of capability for mental health issues is probably indicative of the wider system, but you'd think GPs would want to fight for the health of their patients rather than give up and hide behind bureaucracy.

One of the receptionists is helpful and friendly, while another is not, will provide you with unsolicited and incorrect medical advise (e.g. that there are no such thing as prescription hayfever tablets), and seems to view their role as gatekeeper rather than public healthcare facilitator.

I have been a patient of the surgery for over 40 years and have had some very good service over the years, and some not so favourable.

My grievance has risen today, regarding my appointment, or more appropriately, none appointment.

I was asked to return today to complete further tests following my appointment on Monday, ironically where I was seen over 20 minutes late.

I was late by 10 mins due to a number of significant hold ups, completely out of my control, including long delays as a result of a motorcyclist being knocked off their bike and emergency workers in the road.

After explaining the above I was still flatly refused to be seen by the doctor and an alternative date was my only option.

I believe I am a very amiable person, but to be treated with such disdain has certainly been unnecessarily upsetting and a bitter pill to swallow, pardon the pun.

I accept at times the services provided can be stretched but some type of common sense should be considered.

Moan over.

Always treated with respect and consideration. Able to get an appointment either face to face or on the phone in a timely fashion. Easy to get a blood test. Fabulous staff. I don’t mind which doctor I see as they are all brilliant.
