"Tregwilym Lodge is a great place for my dad. The food is good, but the children's portions can be a bit too big. The laundry staff seem to lose my dad's socks and hankies, so we have to keep buying them. My dad has his own TV in his room, so he's okay."

"I was impressed with the care and attention provided by the staff at Tregwilym Lodge. The nurses are knowledgeable and responsive, and the facility is clean and well-maintained. My mom is enjoying the activities and social events, and I appreciate the flexibility of the care plans."

In the beginning, I thought this home was wonderful, but as a few years go by I didn’t think they were that good to be honest

Relative was brought here after months waiting in hospital. On first visit we were weary. Staff had taken no notice of our family members info/medical needs. And we were repeating ourselves on every visit. Still we physically saw them doing the complete opposite. (This was later proven by ambulance staff and CIW) on every visit our relative was still in bed with curtains closed. Clearly hadn’t been attended to even past 11am. Drinks and food left on the side and unable to reach. No bed rails in place or wedges so bed was literally in bed on the floor. Each visit was heartbreaking as we could see the lack of care given as well the decline in health as a result. We witnessed some horrific moments between relative and staff. But our last visit was the final straw- arriving at the home we were told our family member had taken a fall and the ambulance were en route. We quickly realised according to the ambulance staff that our fam member had been put in a chair in their room and left for hours with no check up. Later found on the floor where they had been for a number of hours according to the staffs records. Paperwork was not being completed. Relative was found Cold, dehydrated, completely confused and hallucinating. My understanding is that serious reports were made against the home and the experience for us all was utterly heartbreaking. Our relative died a few months later and we believe with complete conviction that bringing them to this “home” was where it all went downhill. I am so truly sorry we chose so poorly and we are all to this day beside ourselves thinking of the heartbreak he went through living his final months in such misery.

UPDATE-in response to owners reply- I am also disappointed and disgusted to read your response which is neither accurate nor reflective of what we as a family experienced. My review is not “false” or “malicious” it is the experience of a family who trusted you with their loved one and when asked to leave a review we have done exactly that. Care Inspectorate Wales, Newport City Council Contract and Commissioning Team, and ABUHB Governance Nursing Team were all involved and we have the emails/ call logs to prove it. It’s painful for us to see that to this day you are unable to accept responsibility for some of the failings within the home at the time - and use your 1 star reviews as constructive criticism. (The point of leaving a review)

Every individual deserves a place to be called Home and this is what Tregwilym advocates. Residents are kept safe 24 hours and there is always a help at hand where it’s day or night. From every members of different departments collaborating together to provide a high levels of care. These ensures all service users care requirements are met beyond expectations and rest assured the relatives have peace of mind.

Every member of the team made a significant contributions for the success of the organisation. The management team practices open communication, identity areas required improvements and action in timely manner. The management is very supportive to all staff in relation to career progression making an environment where everyone feels encouraged.

After a series of conversations with nursing staff at the Gwent, family members of those who were in care at this home and after reading reviews online, we reluctantly accepted the council’s proposal to move Nan into this home. We lasted 3 weeks.
Unfortunately, the rumours of terrible care, unsympathetic staff and just an overall bad experience were all true. If you care for your loved ones and still want them to live as full of a life as possible, do not bring them here.

Although Nan has dementia, she can still converse with you and her personality still shines through. We constantly took Nan out in her wheelchair, to parks, cafes or back to her family home where we would have BBQ’s etc – something she thoroughly enjoyed. After just a few days we were told we could no longer take her out. The higher management were extremely rude and unsympathetic and it bordered on bullying. They were stopping my Nan enjoying her life.

Staff were told of Nans likes and dislikes, but this was constantly ignored. She was brought food which was just left on the side in her room, knowing full well that Nan cannot feed herself. Nan was left to sit in her hot room when staff left faeces all in her toilet and they failed to clean Nan up afterward. The smell was quite unbearable, so I dread to think how long staff left her like that.

We were complaining about the lack of activities, and when the clinical manager went through the activities report, she reported Nan engaging with the activity staff. Nan was not even in the home at the time of the activity, so they falsely reported that they were engaging with Nan – of course they blamed human error and said that a resident who had engaged had similar notes to Nan.

We were unsure as to why they had such a vendetta against Nan enjoying herself and spending time with her family. They kept trying to say that it was a care home and it wasn’t going to be a good experience and we should accept that Nan has dementia and she’s now in care. She really was kept like a prisoner at the home. She has since moved homes and we have nothing but good things to say about them and Nan is now doing really well and enjoying going out with her family.

This place has gone down hill fast, so many issues, team leaders spreading lies, people being made to feel bad for reporting safeguarding issues. Management haven’t got time for you, and make you feel worthless. Residents don’t get the respect they deserve. As the saying goes if your face fits you will be fine, staff being asked to leave positive reviews. One member of staff being sacked for reporting a resident being assaulted by another member of staff yet the one that assaulted a resident still there. Residents being miss treated and bruised. All this place cares about is money many times we have run out of wipes or pads, constantly searching the home for items to do personal care. It isn’t person cantered care here it’s like a production line.

My Mother has been a resident at Tregwilym Lodge Nursing home since May 2019.
It took Mum a little while to settle in but this was expected.
The home is airy & spotlessly clean. The lounge & dining areas are lovely. The bedrooms are good sizes with room for personal effects.
The residents are encouraged to mix out of their rooms in the communal areas.
The food is lovely with a choice for cooked dinners. Help is available for those residents who struggle to feed themselves. They are encouraged to keep up their fluid intake throughout the day. My Mums favourite is the afternoon tea trolley with homemade cake.
The laundry is done onsite & Mum is always nicely dressed & clean.
The home has a team who spend time with the residents from all parts of the home doing activities both inside the home & in the gardens.
A hairdresser visits the home, pre Covid, & judging by Mums hair is back again. A lot of the staff are talented with hair & Mum often has curls & hair accessories in her hair. The staff also do hand massages & manicures. There is a visiting chiropodist as well. Hair cuts, chiropody & toiletries are provided by the home after relatives pay into a fund for their relative.
The communication between relatives & staff is very good.
The most wonderful asset in this care home are its staff both clinical & non clinical.
They are absolutely amazing with my Mum & from what I observed pre Covid, with all the other residents as well. They are all one big family.
The staff quickly learnt Mums quirks & needs.
Indeed since Covid the staff are more like family to Mum than myself & my brothers.
Since visiting by appointment has started the staff do everything in their power to make the visit enjoyable for Mum & myself
I am so pleased that Mum went into Tregwilym Lodge.
