I attended the centre for a blood donation. The décor is a bit dated, but the facilities seem to be clean and fit for purpose. There is a loud bleep as security when you enter which makes it feel a bit institutional.

I decided to make my 20th blood donation locally here in Corby, and to get there; I hopped into a taxi. Honestly, I wasn't sure where the place was, but now that I've got the hang of it, I can catch the number one bus into town, followed by the number two bus that drops me right outside the door of the Stephenson Way Community Centre.

Once I stepped inside the building, I was lost because there wasn't a clear sign telling me where the donation was happening. Nevertheless, I had to use the loo and boy; it looked pretty dated. Plus, there was no soap in the dispenser, but I eventually found one above the hand dryer – a bit peculiar, that! And speaking of the hand dryer, it was one of those old-fashioned, and the smell of burnt dust was quite strong.

But hey, after some exploration, I finally stumbled upon the registration desk. It struck me as a bit odd, you know? Usually, at other donation centres I've been to, you go to the desk first, and then they direct you to the seating area. Here, it was the other way around – the seats came first, and the desk was tucked away in the main hall.

Anyway, after getting my name down and confirming all the necessary details, I was asked to sit with the other donors. One small snag, though, wasn't any deaf-friendly way to announce the names, so I had to read the nurses' lips to figure out when it was my turn.

Finally, when it was time for my turn, they took me to a private area to measure my haemoglobin levels – you know, to check how much I had in my blood. For men like me, the cut-off is 135g of Hb per litre, and for the ladies, it's 125g per litre.

Now, here's the strange part – I failed the test initially, but they had this new test called the capillary HemoCue test, which only required a pinprick of blood from my finger. It turned out I had 149g of Hb per litre, which was a bit on the lower side, but still within the acceptable range. So, I was good to go ahead with the donation!

I got myself comfy in a chair, and they put a blood pressure cuff on my arm, asking me to squeeze my hand to help them find a suitable vein for the extraction. The nurse, Debs, was such a lovely person, and she made sure I understood everything that was going on. The donation went smoothly, and now I'm proud to say that I've completed my 20th blood donation.

Knowing that I might have made a difference in someone's life or even saved one fills me with joy and gratitude. Despite the little hiccups during my visit, the caring staff and their dedication to their work made this giving experience truly special. I'd encourage anyone to donate blood and experience the wonderful feeling of positively impacting others' lives. Cheers!

Love this community centre, it doesn't look huge from the outside but there is a large hall, great garden, kitchen, numerous rooms too. Also the staff are very focused on community - something that is less common today. Very highly recommended.

My wife and I use the centre for a art class every monday and it's a great place to meet our friends and also to do our hobby.

Nice place, community centre for everyone, can you book it for events, plenty of car parking spaces or on the road
