I just want to express my heartfelt gratitude for making such a difference to my fathers life. Following the GP referral we thought it would be a long wait, but your team has picked up the referral. seen and treated my father in no time making a massive difference to his his wellbeing. My father has always been an active person, but recently he stopped all activities due to his urinary frequency and fear of having an accident in public. Your dedication, commitment and compassion towards your patients is truly commendable. Thank you for giving my dad the chance to return to his active lifestyle and continue to enjoy his skiing, cycling and hiking adventures even at the age of 76 years young. Thank you to Dr Kiff for treating my father as a VIP, for his kindness and for making sure his surgery went smoothly and keeping me updated and informed and last but not least, to the hospital team for looking after him so well. I can’t thank you all enough for the difference you made to us all as a family.

Having been diagnosed with BPH several years ago, I have managed the condition with Tamsulosin.  It has helped but over recent months the common symptoms of urgency and frequency started to recur. Then, in the process of pre-operative checks prior to an inguinal hernia procedure last November, I was found to have a small amount of blood in my urine.  This led to further consultations with my GP and then to Consultant Nurse, Susan Nicol and eventually Consultant Urological Surgeon, Mr Thilagarajah, both of Essex Urology at Springfield Hospital.

Following a flexible cystoscopy, which was by no means painful or in any other way problematic, Mr Thilagarajah advised my suitability for either Green Light Laser surgery or for the newer UroLift System procedure.  We discussed the options in some depth and I made other enquires before coming to the conclusion that the apparent advantages of UroLift are such that it is a far less invasive, potentially equally successful and offers a comparatively better recovery.

Just four days later, the procedure was carried out under general anaesthetic.  When I came round I was catheterised, which was uncomfortable, but in less than an hour of consciousness and in the recovery area, that tube was removed.  Back in on the ward, urine samples were required prior to discharge.  Providing these was quite “uncomfortable”, with a bit of bleeding, but by no means “painful".  I was told to expect some discomfort along with “frequency” and “urgency” for a few days and perhaps a little more bleeding.  I was advised not to drive for a week and not to lift, push or pull much weight for a couple of weeks, but that otherwise life could return to normal and I was discharged with antibiotics.

For the first 12 hours or so frequency and urgency was apparent, but there were two occasions only with a little blood; other than this, inconvenience and discomfort has been minimal with no incontinence or soiling at all.  I have followed instructions to drink plenty of water and find my flow rate already to be greatly improved.  What residual sensation there is, is by no means what some of my friends and colleagues have apparently experienced with other procedures and is diminishing daily.  Now, 9 days after the operation, I am already glad that I opted for the UroLift system and I am grateful to Mr Thilagarajah and his team at Essex Urology for their care and consideration.  At this time I am confident that my BPH symptoms will continue to decrease to a point approaching relative normality over a comparatively short period.

Based on my personal experience so shortly after the procedure, I have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending the UroLift System to deal with the symptoms of BPH in suitable patients; given that this is early days and that apparent success becomes long term efficacy.

REZUM (Water Vapour Ablation)

Not given to leaving reviews, but in this case I think it's warranted.
Having suffered for sometime with what I believed to be BPH, I finally got a GP referral to the local hospital urology unit. After twelve months of to-ing and fro-ing for tests etc. it was decided I indeed had BPH (nothing more sinister). I was offered TURPS or HOLEP (I was not suitable for Urolift).
I was not happy with the high (ish) risks of negative side effects of these procedures and had been researching the possibilities of REZUM, I was aware that it had been recently approved by NICE, but it's availability was extremely restricted in the NHS. I knew it was available at a private practice at Basingstoke Hospital and was considering contacting them.
Whilst searching on Google I discovered that Essex Urology at Springfield Hospital offered the procedure. I rang them on a Friday afternoon and was offered a Consultant appointment the following morning.

Enter Mr R Thilagarajah MS FRCS (Urol), very nice guy, very approachable, and unlike some Consultants doesn't speak to you as if your IQ is roughly equivalent to your shoe size!
During the consultation he did a couple of tests, confirmed the BPH diagnosis and assured me I was a suitable candidate for REZUM.

The procedure was carried out on a Saturday morning and I was home for lunch!!
I'd also like to thank Dr Kevin Kiff MBBS MRCP FFCA FFICM, who gets my " Anaesthetist of the Year award", again, nice guy.

I have to say, that after what is now about eight weeks after the procedure the results are amazing, and will continue to improve.

I have no hesitation in recommending this procedure to anyone suffering from BPH (if they are deemed suitable), especially I as I have suffered no negative side effects and the improvement is frankly startling.

I'd like to thank Mr Thilagarajah and his team and the nursing staff at Springfield Hospital for their care and expertise.
I have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone suffering the curse of BPH.

I have been under Mr Thilagarajah for some time and have always found him one of the nicest Specilist I have ever had to visit, he does not have you out the door as quick as he can, he takes time to explain every thing in detail to you, and put you at ease.
My husband has just seen Mr Thilagarajah for a Postrate problem and again he never disappointed, my husband went in for a procedure and felt comfortable the whole time, Mr Thilagarajah anaesthetist was also a smashing guy very funny.

GREEN LIGHT LASER TREATMENT.

I HAVE BEEN RELEASED FROM PROSTATE / BLADDER SERVITUDE by ESSEX UROLOGY.

After years of racing to the toilet, any toilet, because I had to pee or living in a dehydrated state, OWING TO PROSTATITIS WHICH RESTRICTED BOTH URINE FLOW AND BLADDER CAPACITY, I had Green Light Laser Treatment by Mr Thilagarajah and his team at ESSEX UROLOGY.

Dear Mr Thilagarajah,
I am writing to thank you and your team for a brilliant job well done. I have some observations about my current state compared to before the procedure as follows:-

Not standing in a Public Toilet wondering when the flow would begin--brilliant.
Not wondering if the people standing next to me are wondering why I'm still there after 15 mins -- fantastic.
Not standing in front of any toilet wondering when the dribble might finish--excellent.
Not getting up 4/5 times in the night -- flaming wonderful.
Not needing to dehydrate for long journeys by public transport -- brilliant.
Not needing to remember where all the toilets are wherever I am -- fabulous.
Not needing to cultivate extra friends who live along the route from my Local to my home--a bit disappointing as I like meeting new people.
Not having to sit at the end of a row in the Cinema or Theatre-Great.
Being able to walk for 45 minutes with a full bladder -- without the risk of wetting myself--exhilarating--FREEEEEEEEEDOM.
Being a 510 mls champion -- CHAMPION!!!!!!!
Being one of the lucky 50% ie no blow back -- cracking stuff.
Finding out that medicine like other industries--hangs onto names of processes that have changed eg The Bladder Flow Rate Test is now no longer timed as it is now a measurement of Your Bladder Capacity -- Reassuring.
Finding out that I can now knock the flies off a cowpat again after 20 or more years--priceless.
Ignoring the first and only "bladder twitch" early warning sign that you will need a toilet in about two minutes time or you will wet yourself-- Character Building.
Having a waz is now --- a PLEASUUUUUUUUUUUUURE!!!!!!!!!!
