My son joined BHES at the start of year 11. His mainstream secondary school placement was failing and it was looking like he wouldn’t complete the year. He was referred to BHES and after a few weeks of gentle introductions, he joined the classes at the Falkland Road base. This setting was a such a positive experience. Being treated as an individual with individual needs being met, starting with mutual respect for all adults and young people, has lead to my son returning to Education and sitting his GCSE’s - something which looked unlikely the previous September. BHES is a school but it’s so much more than that. The staff gently unpicked years of failing to conform to what mainstream expected, and allowed him to learn in an environment where he could be his authentic self. This not only let him complete his education, but also allowed him to thrive and to show the outside world the funny, clever lad he was always meant to be.

If you're considering sending your child to this school, I recommend looking for alternatives. My overall experience at this school was challenging. While some teachers were helpful, it was disappointing that certain serious issues weren't taken as seriously as they should have been.

I met someone (we’ll call him J) who caused me a lot of emotional distress. J often displayed troubling behavior, which made me uncomfortable. Despite reporting these issues, they were not handled appropriately by the staff, leaving me feeling unsafe and unsupported.

Eventually, I distanced myself from J, but the situation continued to affect me. I also became aware of other concerning incidents involving J and other students. These incidents were reported to the authorities, but unfortunately, the outcomes were not what we had hoped for, and the school didn’t seem to take the necessary steps to ensure student safety.

These events affected my well-being for a long time, and I ultimately decided to leave the area and focus on my health. While I’ve worked hard to move past these experiences, I believe it’s important for parents to stay involved in their children's school life and ensure they feel safe and supported.

Please make sure to check in with your children regularly. The school should be a safe place for everyone, and it's important that any issues are addressed promptly and appropriately.'

I'm super grateful for this school I went here for my last year of year 11 and it helped me get my GCSEs. when I first started here I wasn't sure what it would be like. I was honestly a bit scared because I hadn't been to school since January 2022. so when I started in October it was a shock how different it was from a normal school. I remember in February I started playing dnd every Thursday it was awesome and I loved making my dnd character scarlett. I had English on Thursday as well which was my favourite lesson ☺️ my English maths and science teachers were so lovely.☺️ one of my support workers helped me a lot with college. I'm super grateful for her as she helped me so much finding a college. and I remember every Tuesday after lunch because I had no lesson after lunch me her and another student used to chill out until the end of the day. ☺️
I would like to thank every single person who helped me in this school and if you get to go here I hope you have a great experience like I did ❤️

This School wasn't the greatest but it got me through the year 11 Exams, with the help of a teacher called Hubert, he was the only good teacher in the School.
The Students were horrible. I never really trusted or even talked to any of them.
And there was 1 Teacher that made my mental health worse. There's been times were I had panic attacks and she didn't do anything to help and she made me feel worse. She's made a lot of people have mental breakdowns. She's is going to live with that guilt for the rest of her life.
Overall this was a avarage School.

Hi to future parents/carers who want to bring their child to BHES

I've been reading the comments for the school reviews, personally I believe it's not a right justice to this school (that's my opinion)
Many students that go to BHES are struggling with mental health, disabilities and more and they will all be affected differently by there past experiences as well, which could make things harder within attending this school.

By the way sorry I have a lot to say 🙂

Teachers/staff in the beginning of when I joined didn't really know what to do with me or handle me (in my opinion) but as soon as I started to tell them and show them they began to understand and be able to help me with my needs, I know that parents are going to fight for there kid and 100% do! But coming from the kid is so good as well you get to build relationships with the staff, a letter a phone call it all makes the difference I promise you!

Some of the reviews are about teachers and staff, I just wanted to remind you all that every kid will get on different with each staff member and teacher (especially when you're feeling down, you will be triggered easily and get upset fast by the littlest things. I'm also not saying that you're experiences in the school are not valid i promise 🙂 I didn't get on well with the staff when I first joined. Some of the things sertion staff members have done I do not agree with but what's amazing is the power is stepping up for yourself or just saying something lol.

With the GCES there are not as many subjects but there are ways of getting extra lesson outside of school, if that is that YOUR child wants. The lesson are chil really chill but still maintain that school environment for learning, breaks if needed can be provided by asking a teacher or sorting something with the head or your team leader.

With special things you need to 'survive' the school day can be provided by head teacher or team leader (not all things will be allowed, but always ask so you can get an answer)

With other students "bullying or making fun of the students" although it's not an excuse many pupils have had horrible experience with bullying or something else the anger that they feel may come out or they might call you names. This hasn't happened often unless there has been a friendship group fallout/fight. Nevertheless it will sorted out as soon as possible if reported.

I believe I've covered a lot of the topics, this review is giving you a real insight into the school.

This school saved me, I wouldn't be alive to this day without them, I never thought I could make it to college but here I am because of the school. I suffer with severe anxiety and I went from not being able to leave the house to going out with friends and powering though with the help and support I've received (not just the school the amazing friends I made have walked through this hell with me, the hell is mental health, by the way no one is broken they have just been hurt and need some medical attention to help heal the wounds)

This School helped me with year 11 There was 1 teacher who helped me the most, his name is Hubert, really swell and nice guy, however there was 2 teachers that made my Mental health worse. And so did some of the students. I didn't really get along well with anyone, I just hid in my hoodie, and didn't show my face to anyone. Overall decent School.

i would have died if i hadn't gone to this school - as it was i got amazing grades and moved into further education. i was treated with respect and understanding, and allowed to manage my own education. the staff do have some flaws, as other reviews point out, but in comparison to mainstream education, bhes truly is amazin; a second chance for kids and a gateway to a real future.

I went to this school and the teaches couldn’t care less about the students mental health! All they care about is the money and to get outta school.
The food is vile , it’s all vegan , home made , nothing that would help my eating disorder safe foods!

THEY CAN OPEN THE TOILET DOORS IF THEY WANT TO , IT’S DISGUSTING!
I suffer from social anxiety and the common room was to busy , i went to the “quite corner” , got told of.
There is no where , where kids with social and eating disorders to go
I had no choice but to eat my food in the toilets 🤮 Bcs there was no where quite for me to feel comfortable to be able to eat and be happy!
The staff have no respect for the students disabilities and mental health it’s a terrible school!
